Since 1981, all Vehicle Identification Numbers must adhere to a standard format.
The VIN consists of 17 digits that follow a specific pattern.
You will find the VIN plate located on top of the dashboard, at the base of the windshield on the driver's side and visible from outside the vehicle. Some later vehicles also incorporate a barcode version of the VIN. Please do not use vehicle documentation such as the registration document or MOT certificate for example, as these often contain mistakes.
The most important digits are the 8th and 10th, since these describe the engine type and model year respectively. However, all of the information can be relevant, so please make sure you enter it carefully.
Before 1981, each manufacturer could select the location of the VIN plate and the information it contained. Please do not use vehicle documentation such as the registration document or MOT certificate for example, as these often contain mistakes. All of the information can be relevant, so please make sure you enter it carefully.
